About Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic, progressive disease in which the body is unable to properly use and store glucose (a form of sugar). Glucose backs up in the bloodstream, causing one’s blood glucose (sometimes referred to as blood sugar) to rise too high. This chronic disease is associated with long term damage to various organs, including eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels.
There are two major types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Once diabetes is diagnosed, long term complications associated with poor control can be prevented or delayed when diabetes is controlled.
