Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Hendrick Medical Center provides two types of learning experiences for ACLS. The options consist of a two-day "live", traditional ACLS provider class and the HeartCode Self Learning ACLS course. A one-day recertification “live” class is also available.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course

The traditional ACLS provider course is a 16 hour class offering hands-on learning experiences, as well as case scenarios and lectures. Instructors who participate are from a wide variety of backgrounds including critical care nursing, emergency medicine, and paramedicine. The classes are structured in a non-threatening learning environment with a focus on the individual's learning needs. Physician and nursing continuing education hours are provided.

ACLS Provider Course Guidelines
  • Must have a current Healthcare Provider CPR card - a copy of the card must be presented.
  • $200 for non-Hendrick Medical Center employees; Enrollment is not guaranteed until payment is received.
  • Must complete a written examination with a successful score of 84 % or above at the conclusion of the course.
  • Must complete a mega-code skills performance evaluation.

HeartCode Self-Learning ACLS Course


The HeartCode Self-Learning ACLS Course is the only self-paced computer based learning system that is AHA approved for ACLS course completion.


The HeartCode Self-Learning ACLS Course is a CD-ROM based program designed as a self-paced learning system for the AHA ACLS course. Students can practice their ACLS techniques and receive automatic skill evaluation based on their performance. With the HeartCode System, students can test their techniques and receive AHA ACLS course completion or renewal cards.

HeartCode ACLS Certification and Re-certification Guidelines
  • Must have current BCLS – a copy of the card must be presented.
  • $100 for Hendrick Medical Center employees and affiliates; $110 for non-HMC employees. Payment or approved transfer of funds (TOF) due during orientation.
  • Contact Kelly Runyan at 325.670.2739 to sign-up and to schedule orientation to the computer. Orientation takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Other details about the course will be explained during orientation.
  • Maximum time allowed per computer use is two (2) hours. Only one person at a time allowed during testing. If the computer is available after your scheduled session, you may continue to use it. Check with the staff at the monitor station (ext. 3732) for computer availability.
  • Each participant will be given three (3) months to complete the program.
  • An AHA ACLS completion card will be issued to you upon completion of the program.
  • ACLS books are available upon request.
