Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Hendrick Medical Center provides two types of learning experiences to obtain PALS certification. The options consist of a "live" traditional PALS provider class (two-day class for original certification or one-day for recertification) and the HeartCode PALS course. The HeartCode PALS system is a computerized program that also requires skill demonstration with a PALS instructor.
PALS is an American Heart Association course that focuses on advanced life support techniques for infants and children. These techniques are taught using lecture, videos, and interactive skill stations. The course strives to integrate knowledge and skills into a clinically useful discipline while providing a relaxed learning environment. The PALS instructors represent a wide variety of backgrounds and experience including critical care, paramedicine and pediatric nursing. Continuing education hours are provided for both physicians and nurses.
Course manuals are required text for the class. There is no cost for employees of Hendrick Medical Center, with the exception of the course manual. The cost for non-employees is $200 which includes the course manual. Participants must be able to show a current Healthcare Provider CPR card in order to enroll in the course. Course materials must be picked up prior to the course date.
