Patient Status Codes
When a media representative inquires about the status of a patient, a public relations representative from Hendrick Medical Center will consult with nursing and medical staff to learn the patient's current medical condition. The public relations’ staff is knowledgeable about all HIPAA regulations concerning media, and will only release the appropriate information.
The following terminology will be used. The term stable condition will not be used.
- Undetermined: Patient is awaiting physician and/or assessment.
- Good: Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.
- Fair: Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are excellent.
- Serious: Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators for recovery are questionable.
- Critical: Vital signs may be unstable. Patient is extremely ill. Indicators for recovery are very questionable.
