About Medicaid

Health insurance is not a luxury; it is a necessity. If you do not have medical coverage, you may be eligible for Medicaid.

Medicaid is a type of health insurance for:
  • low-income families
  • children
  • people who are elderly or who have a disability

Medicaid is different from regular health insurance because you do not have to pay for it, and most services are free.

Did you know that, if eligible, you could receive benefits from Medicaid including hospital services, x-ray and laboratory charges, medicine, eyeglasses and hearing aids? Maternity services also are available; even a child's dentist visit could be covered.

Those who are elderly or disabled also are eligible for Medicaid. People who are elderly or have a disability who do not receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may qualify for assistance in a nursing facility, intermediate care facility for people with mental retardation (ICF/MR), state school or state hospital. They may also be eligible under a Medicaid waiver program or continue to qualify after being denied SSI due to a change in income.

Don't pass up quality healthcare because you think you cannot afford it. Chances are, you might be eligible for Medicaid. It is worth it to find out!

Medicaid Eligibility

Medicaid is available to qualifying Texans of all ages and abilities. There are separate programs for families and children and for people who are elderly or have a disability. You must:
  • be a Texas resident
  • be a U.S. citizen who has been legally admitted for residence
  • meet certain resource and income limits, which vary by eligibility group

If you can answer yes to any one of these questions, you may be eligible for Medicaid.

Do you receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

  • Are you a low-income family with children under age 19?
  • Are you low-income and pregnant?
  • Have you left TANF for work or your time limits expired?
  • Do you have high medical bills and cannot pay?
  • Are you elderly or have a disability?

If you answered no to any of these questions, you may still be eligible. Contact Hendrick Medical Center, 325.670.4160 for more information.
