Hendrick Trauma Center
The First Name in Trauma Services
Meeting a Growing Need for the Region’s Only Level III Trauma Center
Hendrick Responds to Growth in Trauma Services
Every day of the year, 24 hours a day, Hendrick keeps a fundamental promise
to the community: to be there, doors open, whenever we are needed.
Hendrick Trauma Center sees more than 51,000 patients a year. This amounts
to 980 visits per week, 140 visits per day. If the Hendrick Trauma Center
were located in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, it would be the third
busiest trauma center, behind Parkland Hospital and Baylor Medical Center.
This expansion will provide the new Trauma Center capacity to see 70,000
patients per year.
For many, the primary
access to healthcare is through the doors of the Trauma Center. Abilene
continues
to grow as a regional medical center
and the new trauma center at Hendrick will only enhance that image. Hendrick
confidently looks forward to the next decade as we once again renew our
commitment to the community. As always, Hendrick’s goal is to get
people the right care, at the right time, in the right setting. We are
proud to be a part of this wonderful place we all call home.
Hendrick Trauma Center is the only Level III trauma center in the region.
Level III Trauma Centers must offer continuous general surgical coverage
and can manage the initial care of serious injuries. The Trauma Center
also has added staff, including two physicians and four RNs. Two separate
entrances, a walk-in entrance and an ambulance bay, will allow staff
to triage patients more efficiently.
Patients will be triaged one of three ways, emergency care, urgent care
and non-urgent care. Thirty-three treatment rooms include six non-urgent
care rooms, 12 urgent care rooms and eight critical care rooms. The emergency
care area includes four cardiac rooms, two trauma rooms, one decontamination
room and two mental health evaluation rooms.
Hendrick Trauma Center also features state-of-the-art equipment. Computer
monitors are equipped to receive X-rays, CT scans and lab results for
physician assessment. Patients will stay in the Trauma Center for X-rays
or CT scans. Both the X-ray lab and the CT lab will have an on-site tech
available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A locator system can track
a specific nurse or doctor from a patient room. SpectraLink wireless
phones will allow trauma center personnel to promptly communicate over
a designated wireless system.

Generous Donors Make Project Possible
Through the generous donations of foundations, physicians, Children’s
Miracle Network, Hendrick Medical Center Auxiliary and many individuals,
more than $5 million has been raised over the last year to make the dream
of a new Hendrick Trauma Center a reality.
Hendrick Health System
gratefully recognizes and honors these major donors whose generosity
contributed
toward construction of this facility:
Dodge Jones Foundation, Shelton Family Foundation, J.E. & L.E. Mabee
Foundation, Diane Graves Owen Foundation, Meadows Foundation, Hendrick
Medical Center Auxiliary and Children's Miracle Network. A painting,
by Jack Maxwell, depicting Hendrick Medical Center Auxilians, honors
the one million dollar gift from the Hendrick Medical Center Auxiliary.
A play area for children is made possible by a donation from Children's
Miracle Network.
The cost of the expanded Trauma Center including construction and equipment
is approximately eight million dollars. Hendrick Trauma Center was built
using local contractors and subcontractors. Rose Builders, Inc. is the
general contractor and Tittle Luther Partnership is the architect.
